Numerical Simulation of Electric Field Distribution around an Instrumented Total Hip Stem

Presently, total joint replacement (TJR) is a standard procedure in orthopedic surgery. Adequate osseointegration of the implant components still remains clinical issue. However, active stimulation bone tissue to enhance ongrowth at surfaces has not been widely investigated so far. For last several years, invasive electromagnetically induced osseotherapy employed practice, e.g., for treatment avascular necrosis, femoral neck fractures, and pseudarthrosis. In present study, approach exploiting electric effect was transferred field TJR. Therefore, commercially available hip stem instrumented with an electrode on its surface order generate supporting regeneration surrounding tissue. The objective conduct numerical simulations validated by experimental investigations as proof concept electro-stimulative stem. results revealed that calculated around fulfills requirements stimulate adjacent when using clinically applied voltages. derived data potentials corresponding fields are encouraging implementation electrical uncemented stems their osseointegration.
